Entrepreneur · Internet Freedom Activist · Technologist
I am an entrepreneur and internet freedom activist working at the intersection of technology, media, and politics — driven by the conviction that access to information and freedom of expression are foundational to democratic society.
Over two decades I have founded and led Balatarin, a Persian-language social media platform I built from the ground up, and NetFreedom Pioneers and Toosheh, a patented satellite-based content delivery system reaching some of the world’s most censored environments.
I hold a PhD in Physics from MIT and a postdoc in bioinformatics from Stanford, and I work across software product building, nonprofit, academic, and startup contexts.
"It's basically smuggled in through the southern border... this is critical because this is getting them to the hand of these citizen journalists and activists."
"We need technological innovation plus logistics."
"Even for a very short time, the free press is magic."
"Let's find different language...major support for freedom activists inside Iran to be able to bring that change themselves."
"While a college student in Tehran, Iran, during the 1990s, he tried to make a satellite dish for the receiver he'd purchased on the black market. Satellite equipment was illegal at the time -- it still is -- and hard to find. So he and a friend made their own DIY dish out of scrap metal in his family's backyard."
"Years later, he became a post-doctoral researcher in bio-informatics at Stanford in 2004, and struck upon the idea of using those same satellite dishes as an alternative to Iran's besieged internet. But he says it took another decade before Iranian satellite receiver boxes began to have use USB ports, making Toosheh's scheme possible."
«توشه یک بستر تکنولوژیکی جدید است که در حال حاضر بهطور مشخص برای مخاطبان در داخل ایران است؛ ولی قابلیت این را دارد که به کشورهای دیگر هم گسترش پیدا کند.»
"Toosheh will offer content with high quality and fast speed."
"Without satellite internet, much of what the world sees from Iran simply wouldn't exist."
"There are security forces everywhere — there is a state of fear."
"Starlink has been crucial."
"We can confirm that the free subscription for Starlink terminals is fully functional."
"Without access to the open internet, Iranian people are trapped inside the regime's propaganda bubble."
"I think most likely they're just afraid of the internet getting used to cause mass unrest..."
"What we need is enough to defeat their game plan, that's it."
"Politicians who make such decisions need to be convinced this is an important issue."
"Internet shutdowns are psychological tools designed to terrify populations, to convince them that they are voiceless."
"Knowing that they are now pressuring high-profile individuals in the community to spy for them is very scary."
"They hadn't tested it before, so they've discovered a lot of things do need access to the outside world."
"By shutting down the internet, the Iranian government isolates protesters from each other and from the rest of the world. Oppression can then exist in a vacuum without on-the-ground solidarity or accountability."
"Toosheh would be the main source of digital information, especially for content relating to women."
"They want to make sure that during those days the videos don't get out quickly enough..."
"The Islamic Republic is very efficient in limiting people's access to these sources, and Iranian people need major help. We need some 50 percent of people to be able to access independent news sources other than the state-controlled media."
"Twitter's impact inside Iran is zero. . . . Here [in the United States], there is lots of buzz, but once you look . . . you see most of it are Americans tweeting among themselves."

"Arguably no one has been as successful as Mehdi Yahyanejad in introducing Iran's social network to a new form of dialogue through this remarkably successful site [Balatarin]." — Abbas Milani
Balatarin is a leading Persian-language social media platform dedicated to fostering free expression, independent thought, and democratic discourse among Persian-speaking communities worldwide. Founded with the mission to empower voices advocating for democracy and human rights, Balatarin provides a secure digital space where users can share ideas, surface news, and challenge authoritarian narratives.
Through initiatives including a mobile app with an integrated VPN — developed in collaboration with Google Jigsaw — the platform ensures secure access to uncensored content for thousands of users inside Iran. Balatarin also leads projects that promote democratic accountability and counter propaganda, including a comprehensive database of Iranian officials for use by journalists, researchers, and policymakers.
NetFreedom Pioneers (NFP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing internet freedom and enabling secure access to information in regions where censorship and restrictions threaten free expression. NFP uses innovative technologies to break down barriers to connectivity, ensuring that individuals can access critical information and engage with the global digital community.
NFP's flagship project, Toosheh, delivers educational, cultural, and news content via satellite to audiences in highly censored environments — no internet connection required. We designed and patented a new protocol that encrypts data within the MPEG-2 broadcast standard, allowing files to be delivered over satellite and recovered on the ground without detection. The system has been deployed across multiple countries.
I welcome conversations about funding opportunities, collaboration, speaking invitations, and advisory roles — particularly in internet freedom, civic technology, and media.
